Identification, address verification and Right to Rent Documents Guide Before you can rent a property in England you need to prove your identity, your current address and your right to rent a property. This is to prevent fraud and to confirm your legal right to rent a property in England. How to prove your right to rent depends on your nationality and immigration status. This guide should assist you with the documents that are required to prove your right to rent in the UK. The documents detailed below are generally sufficient for proving your identity as well as your Right to Rent. In addition we require proof of your current address which can be evidenced using one of the following; council tax demand, utility bill, bank statement, mobile phone bill, tenancy agreement or mortgage statement. All documents must be no more than 6 months old. You will need to show the original documents to us before we can hand over keys to the property.
If you are a British or Irish Citizen, you can prove your right to rent by showing us one of the following:
a British Passport (current or expired)
an Irish Passport (current or expired)
a certificate of registration or naturalisation as a British citizen
If you do not have any of the above documents, you may be able to prove your right to rent by showing us 2 documents from the list below:
A current UK driving licence (full or provisional)
A full birth or adoption certificate from the UK, Guernsey, Jersey, the Isle of Man, or Ireland
A letter from your employer
A letter from a UK government department or local council
Proof that you currently get benefits.
A letter from a British school, college, or university that you go to
A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate.
Proof that you have served in the UK armed forces.
A letter from a private rented sector access scheme or voluntary organisation helping you with housing.
A letter confirming you have been released from prison in the last 6 months.
A letter confirming you are on probation from your offender manager.
A letter from the UK police about the theft of your passport.
If the document is a letter, email, or DBS Certificate it usually needs to be dated within the last 3 months.
